Nigel Shaw – from volunteer to Sunnyside employee

Nigel started with Sunnyside eight years ago as a volunteer and an occasional delivery driver. Having integrated into the Sunnyside family with ease, he soon became a reliable go-to person for various jobs around the charity. In January this year, when Sunnyside signed a significant contract with Bovingdon Parish Council for warden services in and around Bovingdon, Nigel was brought on board as an employee to lead some of the weekly activities. For example, litter-picking, checking for pot holes in the roads, gritting and watering the plants in public areas.

As well as the warden services, Nigel is now responsible for the welfare of the chickens at Northchurch. This involves spotting those that look unhealthy and making sure they are seen to, and ensuring the 350 free ranging chickens in the orchard are generally happy.

Matt Felix, Site Manager at Northchurch, said “We have ambitious plans for the development of our site, including the introduction of farm animals for therapeutic and educational purposes. Nigel will be instrumental in helping me set this up and he will be heavily involved in looking after animals such as sheep and goats. Nigel is a true asset to Sunnyside and we are very grateful to have him on board.”
