Welcome to the SRT blog No. 89

18th February 2022 – Welcome to our blog post No. 89

This week the Activity Centre team brightened the front of The Swan Youth Project on Berkhamsted High Street, replenishing and adding new plants and colour, to the front planters.

Michael Hogan, Tim Michael S & Sharon & Pete tidying up in the woods on a very wet Tuesday.

Sophia, Annette, Michael T, Ellen & Sharon making Sunnyside jam filled biscuits for market. They were so popular they are making them this week as well.

The bakery team at Hemel Food Garden were baking carrot cake & vegan coconut & lime cakes for the café.

Great effort this week with everyone working together on the first week of sowing veg seeds into trays. These will be germinated & grown on in the greenhouse, ready to be planted out in the allotment, hopefully at the end of March.

Also, this week, the trainees have sown beetroot, radish, lettuce, spring onions, onions, sugar snap peas, broad beans and cabbage seeds.

Outside, on the allotment, trainees did a superb job planting garlic which has space between the rows for other vegetable such as the lettuce and spinach which will grow & be harvested more quickly. Every inch counts! Great start to the growing season. Well done everyone.

Mike & Tyler are in print

and are now local celebs in Sarratt village!

Northchurch are busy making things in good time for their ‘Grab & Grow’ veg event in April.  Happy sponge painting terracotta pots, much easier than using a paint brush. They are hoping to put bulbs in the pots ready for Easter……..or eggs.

A group got quite wet pruning the fruit trees with the volunteer work party. Lots learnt about tree pruning……..oh and drinking tea and eating biscuits. If you would like to join us on one of our monthly volunteer work parties in Northchurch please contact Zoe on zoe@sunnysideruraltrust.org.uk

The seedlings are doing really well, developing nicely for the event in April.

And more seed sowing with Graham & Stef checking quality control. This time it’s chillies.

Gillian, Michael, Harry & Ellie on parish work, clearing a pathway in Northchurch.

Charlie, Harry & Charlie painting the summer house a stunning deep blue….calming.

Stay safe – it’s blowing a gale as predicted.

Until next week……..
