Three Awards for Sunnyside Rural Trust

Three Awards for Sunnyside Rural Trust

by Maggie Grand on April 21, 2013

All three of Sunnyside Rural Trust’s sites have just won Awards in the RHS “It’s Your Neighbourhood” scheme and framed certificates were presented to representatives of each site this week by John Crawley, It’s Your Neighbourhood Asessor.

The RHS It’s your Neighbourhood scheme is a grassroots community gardening campaign helping people to make lasting improvements to their local areas.  Groups are supported in their activities with advice and guidance, and receive annual feedback from expert IYN assessors, who provide tips on how further improvements can be made.

The Northchurch site has won the Award for the second time and is in the “thriving category” as is the Activity Centre off Ivy House Lane in Berkhamsted.  Hemel Food Garden, a new site for the Trust, has gained a “developing” Award.

“This is welcome recognition for the hard work carried out on the sites by our trainees, staff and volunteers” said Keely Charlick, Chief Executive for the Trust. “The scheme is all about greening up and cleaning up the environment in which we work which fits very well with our own aims as a charity and social enterprise.”

Sunnyside Rural Trust supports people aged 16 and over with learning disabilities through learning work skills in horticultural and practical activities over three sites.  Produce grown by the Trust is sold on a weekly market and through their onsite shop.
