Hemel Food Garden
Hemel Food Garden is an exciting community initiative run by Sunnyside Rural Trust and based at Dacorum Borough Council’s former Central Nursery site close to Hemel Hempstead town centre. We began the project on 1st August 2011 having won a competitive tender to take over the Council’s site and deliver their bedding plant contracts.
Using our experience of working with people with learning disabilities to deliver horticultural projects in the local area, we are working hard to transform the site to create the Hemel Food Garden which we aim to be a community hub where we can all grow and learn together. High Sheriff of Hertfordshire visits Hemel Food Garden
The Hon Arabella Stuart- Smith, the new High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, visited the Hemel Food Garden on 24th April and was amazed at the size of the site and the range of activities going on. Having a particular interest in horticulture, being a garden designer herself, she enjoyed seeing the huge glasshouse and polytunnels full with all kinds of bedding plants which were being tended by our Service Users. She also looked around the training room, outside growing areas and orchard and was fascinated to see the greenhouse made from recycled plastic drinks bottles. She felt "It is a remarkable enterprise with great vision".
Trip to Watford FC
Season ticket holder and Sunnyside Project worker and driver Mike Turner organised a trip to Watford Football Club on Good Friday. The group of 20 were a mixture of Service Users, parents and staff and enjoyed excellent seats over the goal kindly donated by the club. They also happened to meet a few of the players, the Manager and Harry the Hornet. Michael, one of the Service Users who attended spoke for all of them when he said "It was a great day out and Watford should have won."
