Cafe & Farm Shops

Sunnyside Up Cafe

Sunnyside Up Round Logo

Our farm shop has expanded to create a magical, unique & friendly space. You can enjoy homemade wholesome dishes using locally produced ingredients.  Our exciting café based at Hemel Food Garden is now aptly named ‘Sunnyside Up Café’.

Trainees grow and harvest fruit and vegetables which are served in the café and sold in the farm shop.  The café and farm shop will not only raise funds for Sunnyside Rural Trust, but crucially provide beneficial training & work opportunities for young people and adults with learning disabilities. A new partnership with Hertfordshire County Council’s care leavers team has led to young adults leaving the care system being able to work in the shop to provide them with the confidence and skills to work. The trainees will have an opportunity to work in the all aspects of the farm shop and café including  barista training, food prep, menu, stock checks, make jams and chutneys, serving customers and much more.

Richard Roberts, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said:  “Working at Sunnyside Up Café in Hemel Hempstead will help care leavers to learn essential team building skills that will increase their independence. Young people will learn to deal with members of the public in a fast-paced working environment, to prepare them for employment. We are welcoming donations or specific items from anyone in the community who wants to help.”

Kealey Henderson the cafe manager says ‘Our customers love the fact they are able to combine buying their weekly veg shop with lunch or afternoon tea.  Our barista coffees are proving to be very popular too.’

Customers can enjoy outdoor seating surrounded by herbs and plants.  There is a gate onto the canal so the café is a great place to stop off during a walk or bike ride. Dogs are very welcome.  The café is also available to hire for private parties, meetings and workshops.

The project is supported and funded by the Hertfordshire County Council and other local businesses. We are still looking for donations from businesses and individuals to help complete the transformation so please get in touch to find out how you can help. Volunteers are also needed to work in the café.  Contact Gemma Vine at or ring her on  01442 863364

Sunnyside Up Café is open Monday to Saturday 11am – 3pm.  The address is Hemel Food Garden, Two Waters Road, Hemel Hempstead, HP3 9BY (behind K2 Indian Restaurant) Parking is available on site.
